Marie Gervaise, translator and group organiser in freelance in Lille
I am a Translator from English and German to French & an Interculturel Group Organiser in Freelance. French native, I have studied foreign languages and interculturality in France and in Germany.
Sprechen Sie Deutsch?
Germany has played a crucial role in my personal and professional experience: I lived there as part of the ERASMUS program as well as of internships in translation within associations. I also interpreted daily in French, English and German during a voluntary service in a reception centre for minor refugees.
The French-German encounters that I lead allow me to keep this precious relationship with Germany. They are informative, from a linguistic point of view and an intercultural one. To translate as efficiently as possible, it is essential to immerse oneself in the country’s culture. These encounters between young French and German people enable two communities to get closer and translation serves as a walkway between these two cultures.
Cambodia and Thailand
These two countries are important parts in my social commitment. As a project manager in the association For a Child’s Smile in Cambodia, I discovered the Khmer culture, language and traditions. That experience within an association, which helps children escape from destitution and leads them to decent and skilled jobs, was very rewarding. I practised English in my daily work and learnt the basis of the Khmer language.
My very first experience in Asia was in Thailand, a place so different from France where I felt at home though, thanks to the welcome of an amazing Thai family. Going by myself to the land of smiles at the age of 20 to teach English in a school, Thailand was the first travel bug to bite me and marked the beginning of a long series of discoveries into the unknown.
